More often then not

Despite great advances in computer stress analysis and materials science, our ability to produce components more often than not leads to our ability to fully understand them.

I am confused about "more often than not" because of that I cant understand sentence clearly.. Can you write the sentence in a clear way.

Without knowledge of the subject matter I cannot discern whether it is the ability to produce components that occurs more often than not, or whether the ability to fully understand them occurs more often than not from producing them rather than from the great advances in computer stress analysis, etc.
