Can you guys let me know it this sounds right? If not, how to improve? Thanks!

At a time when The New York Times publishes on its front page an average of 1.35 news items on interest rate a day about interest rates, it has become more of a topic than a mere term. (I have no idea what you are trying to say.).

What I try to say is, since the newspaper publishes so many news stories about interest rate, it's no longer merely a term, it becomes a topic.

So does this expression, "more of sth than sth" sound about right?
