More loudly versus louder

Hi teachers,
Which one is correct?
a) The audience applauded more loudly for her than for him.
a) The audience applauded louder for her than for him.

'loud' can be an adjective or an adverb, so both are fine. You need an adverb here, and both "more loudly" and "louder" count as adverbs. CJ

'loud' can be an adjective or an adverb, so both are fine.

You need an adverb here, and both "more loudly" and "louder" count as adverbs.

Thank you very much for your reply and comments.
So every time the adverb finishes in '-ly' we put more for the comparative and most for the superlative, like 'privately' and 'probably', except for the adverb 'early'. 'Early' is the only exception, isn't it?
