Mor'du

The Legend of Mor'du is a movie title.

Could you please tell me why there is an apostrophe between "r" and "d"?

I understand that British people do not pronounce "r" unless it is followed by a vowel.

Does this apostrophe mean "r" should be pronounced?

Hi It's a good question. The word "Mor'du" comes to English from Gaelic. In that language, originally, it was maybe spelt with an accent above one of the letters.

  • In English, we don't have that means, so an apostrophe has been brought in instead.

As far as I can gather (I stand to be corrected if wrong), "Mor'du" is a fictional name, so it can be spelled any way the creator chooses. According to https://disney.fand

I've been studying Scottish Gaelic, and in the language it would be Mòr Dubh, meaning big black. I can only assume it was shortened to sound spelling and the apostrophe added because it's a proper name, rather than a hyphen.
