Morality

0I'm not sure how to designate morality. If it is a system of beliefs, a way of viewing the world, a view of the world. I give you some examples:02br
02br
001) "Julia Annas has affirmed that the kind of modern moral skepticism which denies the existence of objective moral values rests on a contrast between morality and some other01b00 system of beliefs/way of viewing the world/view02b00 01b00of the world02b00 that is not called into doubt."02br
02br
002) "00In the 1980s, a discussion took place between Julia Annas and Richard Bett over whether ontological moral skepticism depends on 00a contrast between morality and 01b00some other02b00 system of beliefs/way of viewing the world/view of the world00 that is not called into question."02br
02br
003) "00By now it should be plain that the allegedly non-local moral skeptic portrayed by Bett cannot consistently affirm that 01i00none 02i00of our ways of talking about the world succeeds in describing it in an objective way. In my view, Bett’s claim that modern moral skepticism is not essentially local seems to be based upon an invalid inference. For from the fact that, to deny the objectivity of morality, one need not be sure about the objectivity of 01i00every 02i00other 01b00way of looking at the world/view of the world/ way of talking about the world/view of the world02b00, Bett invalidly infers that, to deny the objectivity of morality, one need not be certain about the objectivity of 01i00any 02i00other 01b00way of looking at the world/view of the world/ way of talking about the world/view of the world02b00."02br

0Hmm. Your choices are all reasonable. All I can suggest is what comes from the dictionaries--02br

0Yes, but in a single essay, and especially in a single paragraph (3), I would think you would want to vary your phrasing somewhat for variety's sake.0-

1b01i00In02i02b00, certainly. And I would cut short the second to read: "one need not be certain about the truth of 01i00any 02i00other system of beliefs."0-

0By the way, in this sentence: 02br

10It's an awkward question. Is a "system" necessary to everything that is called morality, I wonder? Also, "a way of viewing the world" and

0Yes, I suppose it depends upon how each of us defines it. I mean, some of the authors who have written on morality (or on ethics) give different definitions of it. I personally think that morality at least presupposes, or is based upon, some beliefs. And I use "system" in order not to use "set", and because I think that the moral beliefs of a person or group of persons are (or at any rate must
