In the sense that one's morals may be good or bad, or that one's morality may be good or bad, the "moral high ground" would be the "position" of better morals in a particular conflict or issue.

"High ground" implies some kind of battle, in the traditional sense. The person who holds the high ground holds a strategic advantage.

One does not always win or lose a battle because of "moral superiority," but when one "claims" [to hold] the moral high ground, one is usually appealing to those who will judge the winners and losers, asking them to judge on the basis of their claim to be "more ethical."

To claim the moral high ground is to imply that your opponent is immoral, or less moral than you. He inhabits the moral low ground.

In terms of goodness, my position is the right one to hold.

In terms of "high" and "low," I'm placing myself on a pedestal, so to speak.
