Are mood and tone the same?  If not , Is mood an element of literature?

Tone and Mood both are literary elements.

Tone is a manner, a feeling or atmosphere the author has meant to set in the story, or towards a subject. Tone is the writer's attitude toward the subject he or she is writing about.

1. I’d rather stay here and wait, than go into that dark room.
The sentence above imposes that the person is scared.

The mood refers to the way a story makes a reader feel. The images, dialogue, and setting of a story are just some of the devices an author might use to create the mood.Mood is the feeling or atmosphere perceived by the reader. It is the emotions you feel while reading.

1. The man said harsh words to the poor guy and did not help him at all out.
The sentence gives you a feeling of anger, or pity towards the poor person.
