Months of the vs a year?

I was curious what difference does it make if I write "a year" instead of "the year" on the classroom whiteboard when teaching the kids about names of the year.

Thanks!

Native speakers say:

months of the year

days of the week

so why not teach them to say it the way native speakers say it?
