Does ''mononym'' mean the person who is known by a single name or does it mean the single name by which the person is known?

Surely, AlpheccaStars, the definition of ‘mononym’ is “the name given to a person who is famous enough to be known only by one name…” The person is not a mononym…only his name is. ?
