Monitors

Hi, please help me with the word "monitor".

In school, the school director picks older students and makes them responsible for groups of younger students – may we call the older students “monitors”?

For instance:
"Monitors were assigned to each group and explained them how the activities would take place..."

Thank you.

They are a rare thing in the UK, now. Pretty much limited to private schools.
