Monetarize?

Hi,

An editor inserted the term "monetarized cost" in the economic report we're typesetting. My question is, is "monetarized" the same as "monetized," and is it acceptable? It's not in the dictionaries, but based on a Google search it has been used in economics books. The editor and I are nonnative speakers of English.

Thanks.

I presume that they mean the same. Like you, I cannot find 'monetarize' in any of the online dictionaries or in my Shorter Oxford. However, it does appear in some reputable texts.

  • I suggest that it is an erroneous coinage that may gain general acceptance.
  • Meanwhile, I would use 'monetized' instead.
