Many social customs, patterns, customs, or folkways are not inherently right or wrong, but they are important because their observance by everybody makes large areas of life predictable.

I don't even say "folkways". I've never been involved in the study of such things, so the vocabulary is somewhat unfamiliar to me. "social folkways" doesn't sound right, but it may be.
