Hello . Are these two sentences the same, are they right or not?

1. I couldn´t play chess
2. I didn´t know how to play chess

Both are correct English. #2 means eg you didn't know the rules of the game. #1 can mean this, but can also mean you knew the rules but you didn't have a chess board or an opponent..
