Modal verbs

Hello,

I'm doing an exercise on modal verbs, which is quite easy, however one sentence makes me wonder.
Could you, please, help me with this one?

............... play any musical instruments?
a) can you
b) are you able to
c) were you able to
d) have you been able to

Which answer is right? To me, a, b is correct, and c as well.

Thank you

They are all correct. "Can you" is by far the most frequent, I'm sure.

If they are all correct, then the exercise is useless. I'm supposed to choose the correct answer of these four.
Thank you, Enoon

I guess they want "can you". The exercise is about modal verbs, after all. It's pretty early here, and I'm not at the top of my game yet today. Sorry about that.

I see, but isn't "be able" a model verb, as well? In my grammar book, it is described in the Modal Verb chapter.

As far as I know that modal verbs consits of shall.,must.,can.,will.,may.,so I guess the correct one is can.,when there ia a modal so the verb must come back to infinitive..thank U..
