Modal: should

Would you please give me two or three examples of sentences using "should" as the past tense of "shall"? Thanks!

Top answer

'shall' is so rarely used that almost the only use of 'should' as the past of 'shall' would be in reported speech. " he asked her. > He asked her if they should dance.

  • 'shall' is so rarely used that almost the only use of 'should' as the past of 'shall' would be in reported speech.
  • " he asked her.
  • > He asked her if they should dance.
  • Though the sentences above illustrate the point, that reported speech is unlikely to be used.
  • More likely you'll hear "He asked her to dance".
