Hello guys,,

Could anyone please tell me difference between following,

Would rather and had rather

Would better and had better

Would sooner and had sooner

Rather than and Sooner than

Top answer

"Would rather" and "had rather" are both possible, although 'had rather' is rather old-fashioned. Nowadays, I'd always stick with "Would rather". I have never heard of "Would better".

I have never heard of "Would better". Use "had better". For example, if someone said to me: "You'd better do your work", I would automatically interpret it as "You had better do your work."

I would use these ones: "would rather", "had better", "would sooner".

To me, "had rather" and "had sooner" sound old-fashioned, while "would better" just sounds wrong (as a substitute for "had better", that is).
