Could someone please offer a good, general, all-purpose definition of "modal," as we use it here?

Wiki has a good definition in as well as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modal_auxiliary%20itself. . Also see auxilliary verb.

Thanks, Ms. Stars. Those are helpful. Yet it seems I hear the term also used when auxilliaries are not involved. I don't have examples at the moment. I was hoping for something more general. Perhaps I'm mistaken.
