Mm, why did you want a photo of me anyway

Mom: Watch the birdie.
Boy: What birdie? Is there a bird in here? Oh, I see that bird.
Mom: No, not that bird. I mean here, look here into the camera.
Boy: You've got a bird inside the camera? I don't see anything.
Mom: No. There isn't really a bird inside the camera. Watch the
birdie means look into the lens of the camera.
Boy: Oh, alright, I'm looking into the lens of the camera. Now, what?
Mom: Smile. Oh, come on. Don't be shy. Give us a smile. Say cheese.
Boy: Cheese. What's cheese got to do with it?
Mom: Well, when you say cheese, you show your teeth, cheese, and
you smile. Oh, come on don't be shy. Just say cheese.
Boy: I'm not shy and I'm not embarrassed at all. Cheese.
Mom: No, no, not like that, a happy smile. Oh, what can I do to make him laugh?
Oh, I know, I'll make a funny face. Eh. Ha, ha, ha. That's it. Finally. Ha, ha, ha.
Boy: Oh, thanks goodness. Is it all over now? Can I get up?
Mom: Sure.
Boy: Mm, why did you want a photo of me anyway?
Mom: To put on the front of the photo album.

The online dictionaries aren't much help, are they? I had to roll out the big gun:

Used for emphasis at the end of a question; ‘may I ask?’, ‘would you say?’ Also sometimes used to indicate firmer intent to direct the conversation, or to register scepticism, exasperation, etc.: ‘anyhow’, ‘more to the point’." (OED online).
