Mixture of strange words

Can you please suggest which form is correct in my sentence?

"The man uses a mixture of strange words which is/are difficult to uderstand"

Should it be "is" - referring to the mixture
or "are" - referring to strange words?

just like Anonymous above, I also don't follow the logic of your statement.

I stand corrected: The verb should be are.

If I were ashamed to be wrong I would blame it on being up all night -- but I make mistakes when I'm absolutely fresh. Take it as evidence that even well-educated native speakers make mistakes.

When I started to diagram this sentence on paper, I realized the difficulty. Am I showing my age
