Hello, I have to put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense, there' s an example: "French is essential in this job. All the telephonists speak it. If they (not know) French they (not understand) half the callers." I think it's not mixed type sentence but the exercide says it is. Could you tell me what I have to write and why? Thank you!

I agree that a mixed conditional is unlikely here.
As we are told that they speak French, then the natural sentence for me is "If they did not understand French, they would not understand half the callers".
