Mixed questions: article, capitalization and preposition

1. Should I put the word "in" before the word "Between"? My logic seems to ask for it. Why did the word "Impressionist" have to be capitalized?

(In) between which years were the eight Impressionist shows held?

2. Do you need the definite article here?

He was leader of the Chiricahua Apache Indians.

3. Why capitalize here if it is needed?
