Mixed or not mixed conditional ?

Hello,

I've got a problem with this example:

Choose the correct answer:

If I ________ taller, i would have joined a basketball club.

A) would be B)used to be C)had been D) were

The key says that option D is correct. I know that it would a mixed conditional but how can I explain such a choice? Would it be wrong to choose option C as well? Can anyone explain why C isn't the right option (according to the key?).

Emotion: smile

In my view (C) and (D) are both possible. (D) includes the assumption that the person's height has not changed since that time. Obviously that need not be true.
