Hi! I would like to ask you something. There are moments that I feel okay now I understood the mixed conditionals but there are grammar questions that make me feel that I do not get them.
For example: Why should people stop smoking? If people stopped smoking, the threat of heart disease........... reduced. a. be b. will be c. would be d. would have
Could you please explain me why 'd' is not a correct answer? And something more can anyone give me a tip in order to understand the mixed conditionals?
Thank you in advance!

If people stopped smoking, the threat of heart disease.would be reduced.
If they had stopped smoking, they would not have contracted cancer.
The first part of the sentence has 'had'. Actually the second part of the sentence also has 'had'. (they would not have. Because of 'would' the verb is 'have' instead of 'had'.)
