Mixed conditional?

Of course, a sundial did not work at night or on cloudy days, so men kept inventing other ways to keep track of time. One invention was a striped candle. Each stripe took the same amount of time to melt. If each stripe melted in about an hour, about three hours would have passed when three stripes melted.

The passage is from a school textbook. Is the last sentence a mixed conditional type? And I'd like to know whether it is correct to use this type.

That sentence does not read well to me. I would write it like this: If each stripe melted in about an hour, about three hours would have passed when three stripes had melted.
