mix or match

"Half Price Cereal Sale Mix or Match 50% Off Regular Price"

What does 'mix or match' mean?

Thanks,

Top answer

I presume it means that there are a variety of cereal brands on sale, and that you can buy any proportion-- one of each kind, all of one kind, or any ratio in between, as well as any number of packages-- all at the sale price. Seems rather redundant, doesn't it? The usual phrase is mix and match -- said of groups of clothing items which can be worn in various combinations.

Half Price Cereal Sale Mix or Match 50% Off Regular Price "Mix or Match" is a little out of place in this particular ad because it doesn't specify any required quantity. Usually you would see something like "3 for $5, Mix or Match" meaning that

My English study is going to be more practical and will be focused more on real life matters. Hopefully, I would get more help from you in the future.

But it was quite confusing when I saw the sign "10 for $10" the first time. Thanks for pointing this out. I wonder why they don't use "$1 each" instead.

That's easy. If the sign just said "$1 each," people just buy as many as they need. If the sign says "10 for $10," most people will buy ten!
