Mitigate and curb

Hi

Would you say that the red words sound natural? Any suggestions please?

  1. They did not do enough to mitigate the spread of the virus.
  2. They did not do enough to lessen the spread of the virus.
  3. They did not do enough to curb the spread of the virus.

No. You don't want to mitigate it, you want to stop it.

No. Wrong word. You don't lessen a spread.

'lessen' doesn't sound as good as the others to my ear, but all are possible.

'mitigate' and 'curb' carry the same meaning, but 'mitigate' is a a higher register word than 'curb'.

That is the best of the three, but I would prefer others. "Curtail" is also a possibility.
