Misuse of pedophile (US), paedophile (UK)

A Francophile is a person who loves the French and their culture,
An Anglophile is a person who loves the English and their culture,
A xenophile is a person who loves people of other races
An audiophile loves music, a bibliophile, books, everyone knows Philadelphia is the 'city of brotherly love' I could go on but why do we call a pervert who abuses children a p(a)edophile instead of the more sinister term, pederast (seemingly only used for a sexual abuser of boys)?
