Do these sentences carry the same meaning?

He was becoming increasingly mistrustful of doctors.
He was becoming increasingly distrustful of doctors.

Are mistrust and distrust essentially synonymous?

She looked at me with mistrust/distrust.

I checked online and the definitions are almost word for word. I feel no difference myself; I suggest that their uses are idiolectic.
