I'd say

1. ... curled itself; if the baby's already an "it", no reason why the dog shouldn't be!

2. ... pay by cheque or cash

Hi,

1. The dog curled up himself around the baby to protect it. Yes, 'itself' is more common, although 'himself' can be used if the dog is our pet. curled himself up is more idiomatic than curled up himself, which really sounds wrong.

2. ... in cheque or by cash....

I'm confused. Is it 'pay by cash' or 'pay in cash'?

I think Clive advised to say by cheque and in cash, or else with cash or with a cheque.
