Missing word

Hi,

What is the appropriate word to use when there is something tiny and sharp like thorn in your shirt .

"I feel something like a thorn ___ (sticking/ poking/ etc) me under my pant".

"As i laid down on my bed, a sharp tool had ____________(scratched/poked/cut /etc) my back. It looked like someone had left a scissor on my bed".

Thanks.

Top answer

Thanks for your prompt reply Doodles.

How about a thorn 'sticking' under my pant? Is it wrong to say so or it is just not as good as poking.

Thanks you:-)

perhaps:

to p_r_i_c_k (hm, they seem to have some censorship machine here)

1 : to pierce slightly with something sharp-pointed : make a puncture
in : drive a fine point into <***** holes in paper>: as a (1) : to
wound usually slightly with a pointed instrument <pricked his finger
with a pin> (2) : to give a slight piercing wound to <the pin

oh Marius thanks for your brief but clear definition. I have learned an useful verb today '- "*****"!:). I know "pricky" but i didn't know i could be use as verb on his own.

This forum has censorship machine? i'm not sure but it has been very kind to me so far:-)

Hi,

Let's just say that it is appropriate in a discussion that involves the verb 'poke'.

Best wishes, Clive

I'd choose "scratch" and "stab" to fill the blanks.

Dear MrPedantic,

Thanks for your reply. To me, 'stab' somehow sounds a bit serious and perhaps serious enough to cause blood and deep wound. For example, "Stabbing someone with a knife", one can immediately envisage the seriousness of the injury caused. In my sentences, i'd want to express like something sharp is 'disturbing' me but not to the extent where injury incurred. In this case,
