misrepresent themselves

Sadly, Internet social network sites have become another place for hackers, con artists, and sexual predators to prowl for unsuspecting victims. The nature of the Internet allows people to freely misrepresent themselves and pretend to be someone or something they're not.

Does "misrepresent themselves" in the above mean "pretend to be someone or something they're not?" If not, what does it refer to exactly? Thanks.
