Misread/Misinterpret

What's the difference between the two words?

I checked the dictionary and

Misread: To misinterpret. To read incorrectly.

Misinterpret: To interpret wrong.

So is misread interchangeable with misinterpret, or do they have different meanings?

So is misread interchangeable with misinterpret, or do they have different meanings? They can be the same. " But "misread" can be literal, "He misread the last line of hieroglyphs, taking the stork to be an ibis", and he did not misinterpret it.

  • They can be the same.

  • It is not possible to cover every possible use of the two words, but I think it is safe to say that no two words in English are 100% interchangable.

Generally speaking, I wouldn't say they are interchangeable.

misread eg the word is pet, but your eyes see it as get.

misinterpret You read the word correctly. Then you think you know its meaning, but you are wrong.

Mis read - to read it wrongly. So you see "bread" and you think it is "beard". It is a mistake with your eye and brain.

Mis interpret - you interpret or understand the text wrongly. The text says "No news is good news" and you think this means "all news is bad"
