Our office elevator has a sign that reads “Firefighters’ Operation”. It seems to me that the apostrophe is misplaced but I’m not sure. Can you explain why this is correct and if it isn’t, why it is incorrect?
Thanks,
WVevie
The sign refers to a mode of operation of the elevator that is invoked by a firefighter putting an access key in the keyhole and turning it. This mode of operation belongs exclusively to firefighters. Ordinary people cannot operate the elevator in that mode.
