Speech & Pronunciation

mischievous

Hi,

I listened to a VOA special English audio file the other day and noticed the reader putting the stress on the second (first) syllable in this word.

Is such pronunciation acceptable in today's AmEng?

Thank you!

Yes, it is common. They add a syllable, too: mis-'che-ve-?s

Yes, that pattern (stressing the middle syllable) is gaining currency in AmE

Few more with that new pattern:

lamentable
combatant
combative
composite
posthumous
quintuple and other words with -uple

Do you stress the first syllable of all of those as with mischievous in, I assume, BrE?

Understood. Thank you!
