Could I use these if I wanted to say that the actors in a particular comedy play tend to break character after a while and just start riffing? They simply adjust the dialogue to make it funnier.

More natural English is just eg “The actors in the play like to improvise with the dialogue.
If they are good actors, they will be able to do this without breaking character. Breaking character is frowned upon by theatre people.
