Miscellany

Are these correct?

1. The argument was among Mr. Micawber, Mr. Wordy, and Victo.

2. Negotiations on a debate format are under way between the network and the Ford, Carter and McCarthy committees. (It appears as though there are more than two here, but actually we have the Ford, Carter, and Mccarthy committees on one side -- and the network on the other; thus we'd use between in this one.)

3. Do you prefer the serial comma in sentences? One or two below?
The flag was red, white, and blue.
The flag was red, white and blue.

4. He acted as if he owned the place.
He acted like he owned the place.
The first or the second?

5. Adjacent numbers. Agree with all?

He cashed fifteen $15 gift certificates.
He purchased eleven 8-watt light bulbs.
She baked twenty-five 12-pound cakes for the soiree.

1 and 2. Once upon a time, people insisted that you used "between" for two things and "among" for three or more. That no longer applies, if you mean that each interacted with the other.

You can probably google "among between" and get all sorts of discussion on that. I have no problem using "between" with three people who are all arguing with each other.

3. I always use the serial comma.
