Hi,

Can one say?

-'means of traffic' in the same way we say 'means of transport'

-'repair the problem'

-'We send the goods by trains and by cars' instead of 'We send goods by train and by car'.

-'Trains and buses are good transport' instead of 'Trains and buses are good means of transport'.

Lots of thanks.

No, you cannot use "means of traffic" in that context. In a roundabout way, I suppose it is technically acceptable, but no-one would say it. You can say "repair the problem", but "resolve" is generally a better word in that context.

  • You could say either "We send the goods by trains and by cars" or "We send goods by train and by car", but the second sentence is much better.
  • There are contexts where the first sentence might sound just as natural, but in general stick to the second.
