Minor confusion about a simple sentence

I am teaching simple sentences to my elementary school class, and need something clarifying.


In the sentence

David loves eating apples.



Can someone confirm the status of the word love in this context, as in "David really likes"

I think it's an adverb as it adds more information to the verb 'eating'.
