Minimize with countable nouns

Hi

Can the verb minimize be used with countable nouns?

A - Hey, why did they close the road from here?
B - Presumably to minimize the number of accidents. [I don't think "minimize accidents" would work at all?]

-- reduce the number of accidents
-- lower the number of accidents
-- turn down the number of accidents

Thanks,

Tom
