Is it OK to use this verb in: The stress is on what they have in common ( differences should be mimimized) ?

It is minimize or minimiseEmotion: smile

If you're British, it's minimise; if you're on the other side of the Atlantic, it's minimize.

I'm neither, but I guess if I used realise before, I have to use minimise now, too.

Yes, by all means remain consistent-- and there are a lot of those -ize/-ise verbs. Strictly speaking, you should therefore also adhere to other Briticisms-- centre, dialogue, colour, etc.
