I'll have to resort to my recollection of song lyrics:
Jingle Bell Rock - Mix and mingle . These are practically synonymous.

Puttin' On The Ritz - Come, let's mix where Rockafellas walk with sticks, or umbrellas in their mitts. . (substitute "mingle" for "mix.")

These both refer to a social phenomenon. School dances used to be called "mixers." You would learn how to mingle with the crowd. In this case it refers to positive social interaction with other people.

Hey, go out there and mingle! Meet some people! .

Hurry! Let's mingle with the crowd so the police won't spot us! . This usage is not social. It means to blend in. .

I think it's also used in a scientific sense, where substances mingle (or comingle) in some sort of mixture.
The precipitation will be rain mingled with snow and hail. .

The difference I see between mix and mingle is that mingle stresses that the substances are made up of individual particles. I don't think you'd say that two liquids were mingled. Although you'd say "the odor of tobacco mingled with the scent of her perfume."

Also, "mix" may be transitive or intransitive, while "mingle" is only intransitive.
Mix/blend the bluberries in with the dough. But not: Mingle the two together, OR Mingle the bluberries with the dough. (I may be wrong.)
