I would say:

The first one suggests that the player chose not to follow the rule on this occasion (and was wrong in choosing not to). The player might have had trouble with the time left on the clock; or maybe they were distracted by another line of play that looked attractive to them; or maybe they underestimated their opponent

With his mind on what promises to be a very pleasant game, Black has forgotten a very important principle.

To me, the implication is that Black is too involved in enjoying the game, and forgetting to concentrate on winning.
