Milk

Hi everyone, I have a question.
I am reading this short story in English. A woman tells her husband to buy a number or products, including milk. When he comes back, she looks at his purchases and sees that there is no milk.
She asks:
"What about milk?!"
1. Why not "the milk"? It has already been mentioned (when she asked him to buy some). Or is it because she has no specific milk in mind?
2. Would it be also correct in this case to say "the milk"?

Thanks!
Doris
