miles on

"But the wizard called them to their senses. We must be getting on at once, now we are a little rested,' he said. ' They will be out after us in hundreds when night comes on; and already shadows are lengthening. They can smell out footsteps for hours and hours after we have passed. We must be miles on before dusk. There will be a bit of moon, if it keeps fine, and that is lucky."

The trouble with emoticons is that they are not English but a poor substitute, and not everyone knows what they mean. I never use them.

OK! Actually, I want to express a kind of self-mockery, and just like I had answered a question very stupid so that I don't want to speak to myself any more. Could you comprehend such emotion? I don't know how to express it by a idiomatic way. This is the reason why I used a emoticon. So what would you say in real English?

Hi rpsh,

I have a real grudge agains emoticons, but not against you, of course. What I wish students of English would do is try to use English, even if it is not perfect, instead of Disneyesque happy and sad cartoons. They are learning a language, not drawing.

Ok, then give it a try in English!

You know it's the biggest problem for me. I always consider things in Chinese way subconsciously. And I afraid to be taunt because of my obvious and awkward reply. Thank you for your encouragement! And I'll try to use words to express as possible as I can henceforth.
