Might've vs Could've?

I'm having a little trouble understanding the difference between Might have and Could have

Could someone please tell me the difference between them and add some examples?

Thank you!

htrek Could someone please tell me the difference between them and add some examples? Quite often there is no difference, and you can substitute one for the other. Occasionally, however, one of the two is a little better choice.

  • Note this example: The shell that damaged my plane could have killed me.
  • (~ had the power to kill me; would have been able to kill me) This is perhaps less likely to occur than might have killed me (~ maybe the shell killed me) because the speaker can't possibly be in doubt about whether he is alive or dead.
