Might or May

Dear all,

I have a question regarding the usage of "might".

Is it correct to say: "If you are free, might I suggest that you help me with the dishes?" I am choosing might over may because it sounds more polite. It sounds all right, and I would have just left it at that but for the fact that I have always thought of might as the past tense of may. Is might only used as the past tense of may, or can it sometimes take on the present tense, like in my example?

Many thanks!
