What does might have been ... mean here?
Why is it used instead of would/could rest?

He placed the elf into the grave, arranged his tiny limbs so that he might have been resting, then climbed out and gazed for the last time upon the little body.

"he might have been resting" means something like "you could imagine that he was resting". "would/could rest" does not make literal sense if someone is dead, although it is possible that "rest" could be used as a euphemism.
