Can one say
a. In those days, a man might kill his wife if he caught her in the act of cheating on him.
b. In those days, a man might have killed his wife if he caught her in the act of cheating on him.

c. In those days, a man could kill his wife if he caught her in the act of cheating on him.
d. In those days, a man could have killed his wife if he caught her in the act of cheating on him.

?

Which ones mean it was possible for man to kill his wife if .... and which ones mean a man was allowed to kill his wife if...?
