Midland

Hello

In her diffident attempt tomaintain secrecy she had left Alchester without the precaution of obtaining a testimonial. This she recognized as the action of a fool, but she had taught in the ugly Midland town for a bare two years, and she carried

in her shabby handbag a coolly eulogistic report of her twenty years’ work in Africa.

Does Midland is a town or maybe it refers to the central part of England, however they call it Midlands not Midland?

It just sounds strange to me that she had left Alchester and then we read that she had taught in Midland. That would be 2 different towns.

Yes the Midlands is the area. A town in that area is a Midland town. Alchester is the Midland town described.

Hi

So these are not 2 different towns. She just left Alchester which is located somewhere in the center of England (Midlands).

Thanks

Clive Who is the author? Clive
The author is British, so I suspected that Midland refers to the Midlands, but wasn't sure.

Thanks
