001. The poem starts by the description of a picture of three clouds and a tree which is reflected on a toaster. The reader thinks that the he is seeing it outside but it is reflected on the toaster. The poem then continues by describing the kitchen's window which is blemished and its glass is broken by the winter hunters. The narrator in the poem reincarnates home as "a cell of civilized magic" and while he is listening to a symphony, he is eating breakfast which includes powdered milk. Because the third stanza is talking about the outside world, Ondaatje purposely left a wide space between the second stanza and the third stanza to make the readers look outside of this world he is describing. He then describes the outside world by saying, "a May *** / moves his paws to alter wind." What he means by this is that a dog which is reincarnated as "a May ***" moves its paws to alter wind. The narrator then continues by describing the tiny birds or the minute birds that walk confidently on the cold grass as they know that no one will bother them because it is early spring. He continues by mentioning the winter cobwebs which are being swept using a groom and how his children are sleeping like angles or sleeping in an angled way and how mice are scavenging behind the bottles looking for something to eat. He then describes how his lover is sleeping over his hip and how her "under eyelid that turns like fire." is moving and how fire is representing passion and love. He then describes the outside world by saying the ice is limping in brown hidden waterfalls and how his daughter is burning the lake by reflecting her red shoes in it as if her shoes are dominating and melting the freezing power of the lake. 02br

The image, "I turn a page/careful not to break the rhythms/of you sleeping head on my hip," best reveals the narrator's tenderness because it shows how careful the narrator is not to wake his beloved one up when he is turning the page of the book he is reading. Using the word, "careful," shows the narrator's sensitivity and tenderness because when he is "careful," he will try not to disturb her and to take care of her, not to be awkward, disrespectful, or insensitive. 02br

Ondaatje juxtaposes the line "Stravinsky roars at breakfast" with the next line "Our milk is powdered" because "Stravinsky roars at breakfast" is an example of manmade that nourishes our souls, while "Our milk is powdered" is an example of manmade food that nourishes our body. He means that man first creates what is needed and desired for his soul and then what is desired for his body.02br

Ondaatje begins the poem in contrast by describing the nature and how it is reflected in the toaster and ends it in contrast by describing the nature and how it is reflected in his daughter's shoes. "Or my daughter burns the lake / by reflecting her red shoes in it" shows that people have their own energy and people have their own impact on the environment. When Ondaatje describes how his daughter's shoes is dominating the freezing power of the lake by melting it because of her red shoes, he shows the way that people impact nature in the whole world. His message behind this metaphor is: there is nature, there is us, and we create things in a collaborative respectful manner in order to dominate this world and nourish our souls and bodies.02br
